“A pow wow is a gathering of Indian Nations in a common circle of friendship.
Indian Country is made up of many tribal nations, bands, villages, and pueblos, each with their own traditional tribal beliefs and practices. A pow wow is the common fiber which draws Indian people together. It is a time for sharing with old friends and making new friends; a time for singing and dancing. It is a time for trading; trading craft goods and trading songs.” –by Richard Archuleta (taken from the Taos Pueblo website)

Both Coco (four months) and Lola (three years) had so much fun in the crisp fall air for their autumn portraits. While I photographed Coco, Lola ran around a played in the grass and leaves; when I photographed Lola, Coco loved to watch Lola and every move that Lola made. I believe it’s important to choose a location for that is ideal for your family. If you have a high energy three year old, I usually recommend taking your photographs on location at a site where the child can run around an not be constrained for more than a few minutes at a time. For small babies and newborns, I love using our indoor studio and fluffy blankets to cater to your little one’s warmth and comfort.

Erika Hohn, owner of Octopus Arts Collective, has been teaching yoga to children for 11 years; we took photographs for her upcoming new website! A new resident to Taos, NM from Boulder, CO, Erika is already connecting with children at Shree Yoga Studio as she teaches “Sweet Pea” yoga hour. Erika has a playful personality and a strong musical and dance background; these gifts allow Erika to integrate smiling, chanting, and dance into her yoga classes for kids.

Little David did not like having his photos taken. In fact, he did not seem to want to see me at all! When I was hidden, David smiled. A lot. This photo shoot consisted of me hiding and acting/feeling like the paparazzi, while David’s mom and dad hung out and played with David in the area we were shooting. Thank goodness we were not at my studio for this shoot, there is no way that I would’ve been able to hide and get these great smiles.

During the cold winter days here in Northern New Mexico, we are grateful to use our private (and warm) studio in Taos to capture your child’s portraits. Lola’s mommy wanted photographs of her daughter “in her element” and I believe we accomplished that in this photo shoot. Lola has a very theatrical side to her and we caught her happy, sad, playful, and serious moods. Lola loves her dog, high heels, and the color pink.

Although Gina loves to smile, she wanted some more serious photos during this photo session (as you can see I still captured a few of her precious smile anyway)! Gina is a charming girl who was born in Taos but has lived all over the world; Gina speaks three languages fluently. Gina lives in Germany but visits her grandfather in Arroyo Hondo once a year. While she is in town Gina’s mom always schedules a photo shoot. I have watched this girl grow up over the years.

There is nothing that compares to the beauty of colorful autumn leaves. Josiah and Bryna dressed up in their fall colors for portraits to use in their Christmas cards. As a photographer that has lived in Taos for seven beautiful autumns, I have many gorgeous places “up my sleeve” that have perfect light and color for our digital photography. I do tons of shoots during in the autumn when the leaves are changing so be sure to book your children’s portraits early to get the time that works with your busy school schedule!

Every summer little Kelie comes to New Mexico to hangout with her daddy. It’s hard to tell but during this session Kelie was extremely exhausted from a long flight, followed by a long car ride up to Taos. Needless to say, Kelie wasn’t interested in the camera AT ALL. And then Kelie’s dad worked his magic and Kelie was all giggles. We did this shoot at a location which gave Kelie the opportunity to run around and play while I was shooting these timeless images.

I photographed Erin, her amazing daughter, and great husband, at the popular sculpture gallery, Lumina, just off of the Ski Valley Road outside of Taos. We did this on location family photo session at the end of the summer and my camera picked up all of the rich earth tones of greens and browns that New Mexico generously offers during this season. These guys were incredibly easy to photograph with their nice smiles and beautiful personalities.
